In 1962, just prior to the passing of JFK, Tom Kalili at age 6 moved from Tehran to NY with his parents, older brother and younger sister. Dr. Tom Kalili’s older Brother Shahram is now a chiropractor with a beautiful wife Shabnam, MBA from USC and director of a major hospital. They have two great kids who are 6 time gold medal holders in Tae Kwon Do and digital wiz of technology. Dr. Tom Kalili’s younger sister Suzy was still in diapers, but now a Princess Celebrity Singer and mother of 3 boys. Suzy married Jeff Elghanayan, a successful developer who is like another brother with the most amazing sons, one more kind than the other. Recently the oldest Nicolai beat Dr. Kambiz Kalili in a race running on the beach. Although it was a painful defeat, Dr. Tom Kalili honored that his kids, nieces and nephews are taking the baton of health, compassion and wisdom to the next level. Finally, and most importantly, Dr. Tom Kalili’s beautiful parents Mansour and Zoya who took the strong stance to get them away from drugs and violence in NY during early 70’s and move to CA. Dr. Tom Kalili’s parents always allowed him to expand the envelope of curiosity in both athletics and education.
While attending HS in NY, Dr. Tom Kalili was on the varsity wrestling team so pretty much blind to racial discrimination as many of his closest friends and teammates were Black, Asian and Hispanic. Moreover, although Dr. Tom Kalili dabbled in various drug paraphernalia, quickly he realized that athletics and drugs did not work. In front of his eyes, few of Dr. Tom Kalili’s closest friends died from drug overdose: One was found in a bathtub with a rubber hose and needle in his arm. Dr. Tom Kalili recall whenever they went to parties he was the crowd pleaser with great piano talent; he was tall, skinny and always laughing. When Dr. Tom Kalili saw that he was getting into hard drugs Dr. Tom KaliliI tried to share his beliefs instilled in him from his parents but he had a broken family and never had the support structure. In fact the drugs began to separate him from Dr. Kambiz Kalili.
Another best friend was named Pistol Pete, due to his amazing basketball talent. He and Dr. Kambiz Kalili used to play basketball at the park often. In NY they would get thunder showers and so took breaks laughing and enjoying the rain washing their sweat. Swiftly the rain would stop allowing them to continue play. One time he told Dr. Tom Kalili he purchased 100 tabs of LSD called Sunshine. When Dr. Tom Kalili warned him, he said he will just take a few, sell the rest and make a lot of money. Few weeks later Dr. Tom Kalili saw him and he was already weaker, his basketball game was off and said he had 20 left. When asked did he sell them, he said, no but I will, I can still break even. The final straw of NY was when he was found dead at the basketball court short time later due to LSD overdose and heart attack. So Dr. Tom Kalili’s family packed up, got in a new 1972 Chevy Impala and drove across the states to CA. Prior to leaving, Dr. Tom Kalili’s wrestling coach warned him not to get involved and pursue his dreams.
With the help of Dr. Tom Kalili’s Mom’s brothers, his father purchased a small motel called Westwind Motel. With unity and sacrifice, they endured the aggressive obstacles of being a foreigner in the US. Especially those days, there were minimal Iranians, so they had to adapt quickly in order to survive. Dr. Tom Kalili quickly adapted in school as their base in math and science was strong coming from Iran. Dr. Tom Kalili joined the wrestling team and soon they were two time CA State Champions. Dr. Tom Kalili received an athletic scholarship to UCLA and in 1980 and made it to the US Olympic Trials for Greco Roman Wrestling. However, due to politics, President Carter boycotted the games and they never went to Russia to compete.
In 1979, just prior to the Olympics Dr. Kambiz Kalili applied to 45 dental schools but did not get accepted to any. Dr. Kambiz Kalili later found out that his application was never even looked at due to the Iran Hostage Crises where 53 Americans were held hostage for 444 days in Iran from November 4, 1979 to January 20, 1981, after a group of Islamist students and militants took over the American embassy in support of the Iranian Revolution. So Dr. Kambiz Kalili felt like a beaten young man; his athletic dream down the drain and academic dream thrown in the gutter both due to politics.
Dr. Kambiz Kalili’s friend, Professor Angelo Caputo at UCLA, recently passed, world renown in Oral Bio-mechanics and his family all gave him the support to continue with his endeavors regardless of the obstacles. So Dr. Kambiz Kalili continued with research in the Department of Biomaterials Science at UCLA where he still have a very strong commitment to. During the next year Dr. Kambiz Kalili volunteered as a dental assistant in needy communities. Dr. Kambiz Kalili would recall helping a little boy in Tijuana and the next day he ran towards him and hugged Dr. Kambiz Kalili for ridding his dental pain. How funny it was that those days, not only did they not use gloves, once they ran out of sterilization solution for instruments so we used tequila. Even funnier was that the doctors even used Tequila for some patients as well.
The following year the hostage crisis was over and Dr. Kambiz Kalili got accepted into top schools in the country. Although his grades were just above average, it was his research & clinical volunteering plus Dr. Kambiz Kalili’s drive and family support which enabled him to be accepted. In 1985 Dr. Kambiz Kalili received a doctorate in Medical Dentistry from Boston U, post doctoral research with Harvard and was awarded an Honorary Captain at the US Coast Guard in SF where Dr. Kambiz Kalili treated patients with dental and jaw trauma. When Dr. Kambiz Kalili finally came home the support from his parents, Sister Suzie, her husband Jeff Elghanayan, Brother Shahram and his wife Shabnam was so strong that success and happiness were already in our hearts even before they had any type of real financial wealth.
Presently Dr. Kambiz Kalili the co owner of Smile90210 LLC where he have helped and treated over 2,000 accident / assault and battery and workman comp patients, treated some of the top celebrities to include Arnold Schwarzenegger, Ronald Reagan, top athletes to include Laila & Mohammad Ali, Emmitt Smith, Oscar De La Hoya, the world famous Brazilian Ju Jitsu Fighter, Rickson Gracie, Mayor Bradley who was a UCLA runner and also Olympian, Mike Tyson and others. Dr. Kambiz Kalili have also treated many great families who may have been in need at the time for free and still to this day, once per month continue to give back to patients in need.
Dr. Kambiz Kalili have published over 40 papers primarily in stress and strain of mechanical properties to include orthodontic techniques to benefit NuBrace which is a clear removable orthodontic device for ages 12 to 102. It is FDA approved and over 10 research studies have validated that the NuBrace technique allows for less stress to teeth and bone which is the #1 concern in orthodontics. As the founder of NuBrace, Dr. Kambiz Kalili truly believe that it will help many patients who are concerned of their smile and don’t wish to have unsightly wires in their mouth. ☺ Dr. Kambiz Kalili have over 6 US and global patents and patent applications with over 45 claims, Dr. Kambiz Kalili is a reviewing editor for major dental journal, member of the American & International Dental Research, received Prosthetic Research Award 2004 in Okinawa Japan. Dr. Kambiz Kalili was also awarded to be a Tactical Instructor, Med Division for LAPD.
Dr. Kambiz Kalili’s employees, patients and friends are composed of many races, color and socioeconomic levels which are the foundation behind his inner success and happiness. Patients often complement them for the age, race and religious diversity. Dr. Kambiz Kalili have the most awesome family; Nika Kalili the Mom who is a psychologist and cares for aggressively distraught families through the government, his daughter Viana age 11 and Tommy Jr. age 7 who are his purpose of LIFE. Dr. Kambiz Kalili often tell others, whether they get married or not, get the kids as they will become the most precious jewels of their life. The beauty of watching them learn, coming home and they run for hugs, making polo sabzi and making a mess, having Mom fix it up and all getting together for dinners, dances of Michael Jackson’s impersonations, the drawings you get for father’s Day are more valuable than the hottest beauty pageant winners and red Ferraris. ☺ They are actively involved in both academic and athletic activities, to include: bi-weekly Tae Kwon Do lessons and next month they will enter a tournament in Long Beach where Tommy Jr. will be in the youngest division and Dr. Kambiz Kalili will enter the Masters Division. Their activities have brought them together and given them confidence to get back up when they fall on their face and if their opponents or partners fall to assist them as well with kindness and support. So Dr. Kambiz Kalili’s challenge now is to stay as healthy as possible to enjoy these memorable moments of playing, jumping in the pool, laughing over BBQ with his great family and friends whom he love so much.
Dr. Kambiz Kalili’s message to students is to strive in the direction which they feel happiest, go for it and don’t look back at the many other options which will only become a distraction. Dr. Kambiz Kalili’s message to families is to do what his parents instilled in him; be honest and when you screw up, discuss with others you love to solve the problems and select an option toward a healthier, happier you; filled with unity, love and peace in this beautiful world we live in.
